Current Project:  Lincolnshire Heritage at Risk Project

Click on the logo to view the new project website.

The aim of this project is to undertake an audit of the current condition and survival of historic buildings, sites, monuments and open spaces in Lincolnshire; to raise awareness of both the quality and vulnerability of Lincolnshire's historic environment; and to involve volunteers in the more effective management of their local heritage.

Heritage Lincolnshire will recruit and train volunteers from across the county so that local communities can make an active contribution to the survey of the heritage of their area.  This information will be used to inform a strategy for reducing the incidence of heritage at risk in Lincolnshire and to safeguard these historic assets for the future.

Results of the Pilot study...
MESSAGE TO REGISTERED HERITAGE STEWARDS:
A BIG thank you to all of you who contributed your time and newly gained skills to the completion of the pilot study surveys! We are thrilled that you all responded to the challenge of completing these surveys within a short space of time and really appreciate all of the effort and care you have taken in your new role for the Trust.

These surveys have now all been validated and the results have been released;

  • 86% of the heritage assets within the pilot study parishes were surveyed which is a great achievement.
  • The successfully surveyed assets included 245 Listed Buildings, 50 Unlisted Buildings, 13 Places of Worship, 8 Archaeological Sites and 3 Parks and Gardens.
  • Of these, 92% were found to be at low risk, 5% at medium risk and 3% and high risk.
Training Events for Heritage Stewards

The project is now county wide; we are continuing to work with our existing volunteers and are also recruiting new volunteers to survey over 9,000 heritage assets across Lincolnshire.

If you would like to get involved with the project, details of forthcoming training events are available on the LHAR website. You can contact the Heritage at Risk Team by email: heritage-at-risk@lincsheritage.org or telephone: 01529 461499

Feedback Sessions for volunteer Heritage Stewards

Heritage Lincolnshire hosted feedback sessions for those volunteers who have been involved in the project during the development phase and we have had some excellent responses. Why not contact us and find out how you could get involved?
The role of Heritage Steward has been very popular and we have had very positive feedback from our volunteers:

“Many thanks for the session yesterday - it was most useful to meet other volunteers and hear their stories.” Val Marden, Heritage Steward.

“I really enjoyed the day, despite the weather(!) and would love to do some more surveys. I think it would help me to go out with an experienced surveyor to get a better idea of what is required.” Dave Bassett, Heritage Steward.

“Many thanks for your help, we are really enjoying the surveys!” Rosalind and Kate Grey (mother and daughter team), Heritage Stewards

“Part of the enjoyment was meeting with the inhabitants - many of whom were proud of their buildings and very aware of their heritage. I hope that the surveys were ok - I tried my best!” Elizabeth Parkinson, Heritage Steward

“Well, I hope my survey was useful but I also had a great day out, on my own, enjoying the peace and quiet of a part of Lincolnshire I had never been before!”

John Bainbridge, Heritage Steward
The project has received development funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, English Heritage, Lincolnshire County Council, district councils within the county, and the Lincolnshire Wolds Service.
