Current Project: Tupholme Abbey Sculpture Project
|
If you have visited Tupholme Abbey recently you may have come across our new arrival. Children from Bardney School have been working with Bourne-based artist Nicola McLean on an exciting project to create a larger-than-life sculpture of a fisherman which was completed and installed on site in mid March. The willow and hazel figure is equipped with a wooden fishing pole, an eel basket of wicker and a net of copper wire for his catch of brightly coloured fish.
The sculpture is part of the Limewoods Community Sculpture Project. The inspiration for its design came from the children, who visited the abbey site and held a workshop back at their school to put together their ideas. Their initial design was developed and taken forward by Nicola, and the children worked with her to make and decorate the wooden fish to fill the fisherman's net.
The scuplture stands close to what were once the abbey's fishponds, which would have provided food for the medieval canons. Today the ponds are no longer stocked with fish but they are an important habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Apart from being a very suitable location for a fisherman we wanted to locate him somewhere where visitors would 'happen across' him as they explored the site. We hope that he will encourage even more people to come and enjoy this fascinating but peaceful corner of Lincolnshire.
